What They Didn't Teach Us About Running a Business in Law School

with Neil Tyra

Tyra_LawEntre_Final_Bug-half-2

Do you ever feel like what you learned in law school didn't prepare you for the world of running a law practice? Law school didn't teach us how to start our practices the right way so we could scale them into a thriving business. We didn't learn how to make sure that our businesses would meet our financial goals and provide the type of lifestyle we deserve. After ten years, I was fed up with struggling in my practice and decided to begin a journey to scaling a

successful practice that would actually allow me to finally live the life I've always dreamed of. I invite you to listen in on the conversations I'm having with some of the most successful solo and small firm practitioners  along with leading business entrepreneurs and share how I am implementing what I am learning. All with the goal of helping you take control of your practice, and your life. This is The Law Entrepreneur.

393. Responsible Mining and Responsible Law Firm Ownership with Peter Smith

By | November 20, 2023

Today, my guest, Peter Smith, founded a law firm in beautiful Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Peter’s firm does a number of things, but much of it is centered around the mining industry. While we don’t often talk about specific areas of law on the show, but today it is a fascinating conversation touching on the starting of Peter’s firm that focused on creating a different kind of firm, mining law, real estate, and so many other things. It’s a great conversation that everyone can take something from. I hope you enjoy!

In this episode, Neil and Peter discuss:

  • Staking a mining claim, and how mining ties in with business and real estate.
  • Running your law firm as a business and treating your employees with respect.
  • Creating mentor/mentee relationships in your firm.
  • Evolving your law firm as technology and situations change.

Key Takeaways:

  • There is a larger process to actually mining on claimed land that involves multiple groups of people, including the indigenous tribes of the area.
  • Most mining projects today go through vigorous processes to ensure minimal impact on the environment in a way that was not done in the previous centuries.
  • Paying forward in life is what it is all about.
  • Engage your younger attorneys (and even interns) into the work from the beginning and let them follow through on things. It will benefit the business but also benefit the attorney.

“If you ask the lawyers that work here, I think they get a real, meaningful experience and they feel very supported. Anyone, at any time, can ask for help from anyone else, and I think they’re always willing to give it. And that’s something that we defend that vigorously.” —  Peter Smith

392. Project Management for Law Firms with Katherine Porter

By | November 13, 2023

Today my guest is Katherine Porter. She is a litigation attorney out of Southern California who developed, originally as a side gig, a project management consulting firm that has become more and more of her primary role. We have a really interesting discussion about how project management can be used to understand the workflows, resource allocation, and recognize the bottlenecks in your firm to, ultimately, improve your ability to deliver legal services to your clients. It’s a great discussion for law entrepreneurs of any size. Take a listen!

In this episode, Neil and Katherine discuss:

  • The science and discipline of project management.
  • Workflow process and customer journeys for law firm consistency.
  • Gaining a visual reference for who is doing the work, for both simple and complex items.
  • Technology for project management.

Key Takeaways:

  • Budgets are a key aspect of project management that is becoming more and more important to law firms and to their clients.
  • There is value in creating a workflow chart for all aspects of your law firm, regardless of size.
  • Start with the workflow and other analysis necessary before you create the procedure and process. Doing this will give you a more complete picture of what those procedures need to be from the creation of them.
  • Taking the time to map out the workflow and understand your procedures can be a game-changer for any lawyer. It will also help with better understanding your law firm as a business.

“The better you have things mapped out directly, the better your budget is going to be, which is always really important for any size firm to be able to predict what resources they’re going to need and also how much the client is going to end up paying for the service.” — Katherine Porter
