What They Didn't Teach Us About Running a Business in Law School

with Neil Tyra

Tyra_LawEntre_Final_Bug-half-2

Do you ever feel like what you learned in law school didn't prepare you for the world of running a law practice? Law school didn't teach us how to start our practices the right way so we could scale them into a thriving business. We didn't learn how to make sure that our businesses would meet our financial goals and provide the type of lifestyle we deserve. After ten years, I was fed up with struggling in my practice and decided to begin a journey to scaling a

successful practice that would actually allow me to finally live the life I've always dreamed of. I invite you to listen in on the conversations I'm having with some of the most successful solo and small firm practitioners  along with leading business entrepreneurs and share how I am implementing what I am learning. All with the goal of helping you take control of your practice, and your life. This is The Law Entrepreneur.

382. Mindful Meditation for Attorneys & Entrepreneurs with Lexlee Overton

By | August 28, 2023

This is a classic rerun of my episode with Lexlee Overton. Today we’re covering a slightly different type of topic, but a critical topic for both attorneys and entrepreneurs: how to improve your outlook and mindset through the use of mindfulness meditation.

Our guest, Lexlee Overton is a 5th generation lawyer (that’s right – her parents, her parent’s parents, and her parent’s parent’s parents, and her parent’s parent’s parent’s parents were all trial attorneys) who has seen firsthand the impact that being an attorney can have on someone’s physical and mental health. So she founded Mind Over Law to help other attorneys learn scientifically proven techniques for releasing stress, anxiety, and fear – without changing professions.

381. Attention is the New Currency with Neen James

By | August 21, 2023

This is a classic rerun of our episode with Neen James. Neen is a leadership and attention expert known for delivering high-energy keynote presentations that challenge audiences to leverage their focus and pay attention to what matters most at work and in life – and the value of attention is exactly what we’re going to be talking about today.

Neen recently wrote a new book, Attention Pays: How to Drive Profitability, Productivity, and Accountability, in which she argues that we live in an attention-deficit society and that by having more intentional attention in our actions and relationships with others, we can improve our profitability, productivity, and accountability. Plus, I know that you all will be delighted by her personality, wisdom, and Australian charm.

Neen is also generous enough to offer Law Entrepreneur listeners a FREE gift: you can get a sample chapter for Attention Pays and a copy of her 5-Step Attention Challenge by going to thelawentrepreneur.com/neenjames.

380. Navigating a Post-COVID World in Entertainment Law with Joshua Lastine

By | August 14, 2023

I’m really excited to have Joshua Lastine on the show today. Joshua is an entertainment law attorney, and as many of you know, I’m connected to the entertainment industry through my daughter who is a professional actress at the musical theatre world on the west coast. So I’ve seen a lot of what goes on in the entertainment world from the performers side and from the creative side, but very little about what is behind the curtain on the legal side. Joshua has worked with all the big entities in that arena. He started his practice right after the pandemic and he has built that up and three years since was built into a thriving entertainment law practice. So it’s a great opportunity for me to talk about two things that I like a lot, solo and small firm practitioners and the entertainment industry. And there’s no better representative of that intersection than Joshua Lastine. I hope you enjoy.

In this episode, Neil and Joshua discuss:

  • Overcoming adversity in entertainment and/or law.
  • Tenacity and anti-fragility.
  • Starting a solo practice during lockdown.
  • Maintaining relationships to stay top of mind.

Key Takeaways:

  • Life is about leveling up and the journey it takes to get there, not the final location.
  • It takes different types of lawyers for different types of work that need to be done. If someone declines working with you, it would just be a different personality match.
  • Network early in your law school experience, especially if you know what area of law you are looking to go into.
  • Find a way to organize your contacts into different levels of importance to you and your business and make sure to stay in contact with and top of mind for those people.

“For every battle I have, I just gain that much more experience and become that much better of an attorney.” —  Joshua Lastine
